About Maharaja's College

Maharaja's College in Ernakulam stands out as a truly unique institution for higher education in several special ways. Its rich tradition and impressive achievements across all areas of human endeavor—creating and sharing knowledge, promoting secular and liberal values, supporting inclusive growth and development, and helping marginalized communities climb the social ladder—have made it a powerful force for positive social change. Spread across a beautiful 25-acre campus right in the heart of bustling Kochi, the college is easy to reach by road, rail, air, metro, or even waterways. The campus itself feels like a peaceful retreat with its shady trees, thick green foliage, and freshwater ponds that create a refreshing, nature-filled atmosphere.

The college started very modestly as an elementary English school way back in 1845 in the former princely state of Cochin. The goal was simple but ambitious: to give students "such instruction...as would enable them to converse with Englishmen without the aid of interpreters." Over the decades, Maharaja's College grew steadily in stature—from that small school to a high school in 1868, then a college in 1875. Originally called 'The Ernakulam College' and affiliated with the University of Madras, it offered First Arts courses and quickly became one of the top educational institutions in the Madras Presidency.

British principals led the college during colonial times, and without exception, they were enlightened leaders who helped popularize English education across Cochin. Professor A.F. Sealy, the first Principal from 1875-1892, called himself and his colleagues "labourers in educational work" bringing "light to one of the dark regions of Asia." Yet he also acknowledged it was “a just repayment of an old debt of gratitude which the West owes to the East.”

The Golden Jubilee Year of 1925 was truly memorable. The college was permanently renamed Maharaja's College and elevated to first-grade status by offering Bachelor of Arts programmes in multiple disciplines. It became residential with new hostels and formed an Old Students' Association—one of the oldest (if not the oldest) in the country. The next decade brought even more growth, especially in science programmes, plus a generous 15-acre playground donated by the Thottekat family.

By the time World War II began in 1939, a new science block was complete, and the Physics and Chemistry departments buzzed with research activity. Old-timers still talk proudly about how Professor N.R. Ramachandra Aiyer built a crude wireless set that picked up an encrypted German message about Hitler's plans for the U.S.S.R., which Dr. L.V. Ramaswamy Aiyer—a brilliant polyglot and Dravidian linguistics scholar—deciphered. The Chemistry department even contributed to the war effort by producing tincture for hospitals facing shortages. The college also nurtured political leaders and stayed deeply connected to India's freedom struggle, especially after Gandhi's visit on October 11, 1927.

After independence, and particularly after Kerala's formation as a linguistic state, the college expanded postgraduate offerings and became far more inclusive by welcoming students from marginalized backgrounds. Through the 1970s and 80s, enrollment grew steadily, with 1975 marking grand centenary celebrations. The number of women students and faculty saw phenomenal growth—in fact, by the 1990s, women outnumbered men. That same decade brought innovative courses like B.Sc. Instrumentation and B.Sc. Environment & Water Management.

The new millennium brought technology-enhanced teaching with ICT facilities and a research boom. Today, Maharaja's is a Government-recognized Centre of Excellence with 17 Ph.D. departments and 18 postgraduate programmes. Undergraduate offerings range from music and commerce to computer applications. The campus boasts three hostels and a 15-acre playground with a state-of-the-art synthetic track and pavilion.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) gave special FIST funding to all science departments in 2010. UGC awarded "College with Potential for Excellence," and NAAC gave A-grade re-accreditations in 2006 and 2013. The college dominates Mahatma Gandhi University youth festivals and maintains strong academic performance. As part of the Cluster of Colleges and Kerala's first government autonomous college (2014-15), Maharaja's continues shaping future leaders.
