Highlights Madras Christian College's BCA program provides a solid 3-year foundation in computer applications, programming, and IT fundamentals on its renowned Chennai campus.
Madras Christian College (MCC) has a long history that stretches back over a century and a half to 1837, when a small school was started in the Black Town of Madras by Rev. John Anderson. What began as a modest venture gradually evolved, shaped by the dynamism of dedicated scholars and missionaries. Later, under the leadership of William Miller — who formally named it Madras Christian College in 1877 — the institution established academic traditions and standards that, in many ways, still echo through its corridors today.
MCC shifted from George Town in 1937 to the sprawling 400-acre Tambaram campus, a move that changed its scale and spirit quite significantly. Generations of students have since called this green campus home. Visionary leaders over the years contributed to its steady expansion; Dr. Chandran Devanesen, the first Indian Principal, for instance, brought renewed focus and direction at a time when the institution was redefining itself in independent India.
Historically, MCC has often stayed a step ahead. In 1978, it became one of the first colleges in India to be granted autonomous status, enabling it to frame its own curriculum and adopt innovative methods of evaluation. Over time, the college introduced diploma courses, vocational programmes, and self-financed streams to remain aligned with changing academic and industry trends. Today, through its 34 departments, MCC offers a wide spectrum of programmes in arts, science, commerce, and research. Among its science and computer-related offerings, the BCA degree course provides students with foundational and applied knowledge in computer applications, programming, and emerging technologies — an option often explored by students comparing reputed institutions across regions.
At MCC, though, it has never been only about academics. It is about growth, discovery, and sometimes unexpected connections. With colourful student residences, expansive sports fields, lively cultural festivals, and a student community that feels both diverse and close-knit, the campus experience tends to leave a lasting impression — something alumni often speak about years later.
The centenary celebrations and other milestones have always been thoughtfully marked — 100 years of relocation to Tambaram, visits from national leaders such as Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Rajiv Gandhi, and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The 175th year in 2012 was another proud chapter, attended by dignitaries and marked by the inauguration of new facilities, including solar power plants and modern academic blocks, reflecting MCC’s effort to blend heritage with forward-looking development.
